The property sits on approximately 77 acres of state-owned land with significant building assets. The property originally housed the Whipple School for the Deaf that moved from Ledyard to this location in 1872. In 1921, the State of Connecticut assumed ownership and supervision of the school. The state discontinued its usage in 1980.
A number of state agencies continued to use the property for various activities. In late 2011, the state notified the Town of Groton the campus would close. The State working in concert with the town of Groton seeks to repurpose this excess property for community and economic redevelopment.
